Revoltech Macross VF-1A Review

vf1a1My favorite Macross variable fighter was VF-1J. But at the time there were only VF1-A figures left in strock, so I took the 38th release instead. It’s the first Revoltech action figure I bought, and I wanted to find out just what’s this Revoltech that people have been fuzzing about.

My first impression, Revoltech VF-1A was a nice figure. The paint and color were terrific. The mold looked great and highly detailed, along with all the Super Valkyrie accessories.

vf1a2Yet the demand for VF-1A was quite low, perhaps because people got a bit bored at another release with the same VF design as in the previous ones (VF-1J and VF-1S).

Nonetheless VF-1A is good figure to pose with. Compared to its previous release (#037 Shin Getter 1 OVA), the paint job of VF-1A is very good, as I have mentioned above.
vf1a3
And with little creativity, you can even transform it to Gerwalk or even Fighter mode.. ! It’s far from “Perfect Transformation”, yet, it does look good, don’t you think? You would be needing a double joint accessory in order to make the transformation possible.

Revoltech Shin Getter 1 OVA Review

Shin Getter 1Kaiyodo released the 37th Revoltech powered figure in October 2007. It was Shin Getter 1 from Change! Getter Robo Armageddon OVA. Getter 1 looks awesome just as in the OVA. It comes with a pair of wings, two pairs of hands, two combinable energy blast, and a humongous Getter Axe.

Be careful because Getter design composed of very sharp edges which are earpiece drills, blades on each arm, and the axe. Really it is not a toy for kids.

Getter is equipped with 12+3 revoltech joints, making it possible for many different poses. Unfortunately the upper leg joints may cause little problem as they may not hold firmly in some standing poses. The weight of Getter may also cause posing difficulty in some way (it’s a bit heavier than the other Revoltech figures that I know of).

Shin Getter 2One more thing to mention is the paint job, which is quite demoralizing for a Revoltech fan. On careful observation I found the paint wasn’t completely dry on some parts, particularly the chest, back, abdomen, and hips. Which made the colors on these parts slightly blur, not glossy like the rest.

Aside to the paint job quality, I am quite impressed with Shin Getter 1. Call me bias, because Getter Robo has been one of my favorite mecha. But it does look great on my desk. If you’re collecting Getter Robo series, this one is sure not to be missed.

Fraulein 004 Pocco Review

Pocco 1Pocco was released on April 2008 and taken from the cover girl of Sweet Dreams: Shunya Yamashita’s Works book. I have to admit, Pocco is the prettiest of all Fraulein series so far. The sculpt faithfully followed that on Sweet Dreams book illustration, right down to the little details and colors. In short Pocco looks cute, beautiful, and charming.

But I can’t say the same with durability of the sculpture. From the moment I opened the figure, I noticed the slight crack on one of the wing joint and when I tried moving it, the crack got loose and eventually broke off.

Pocco 2I have read complaints from several people about Fraulein figures being a little too fragile to handle, especially with this 4th release. But I was quite surprised to experience it firsthand. Not only the wing got broken, while I was posing it, the left elbow just fell off the arm, leaving open a square shaped plastic of the monoshaft joint. I managed to put those back together, although I was unsuccessful in making the wing movable. Only the left arm returned to normal.

The paint is another minus thing. Pocco’s belt left a trail mark on the waist, probably after a few times I put a bit pressure on the waist when moving the legs. The paint on some parts seem hasn’t dried completely.

If you’re considering in buying this figure, take extra care in handling it. It seems Kaiyodo sacrifices the quality of the joints and other movable parts for a better and more realistic look.

Pocco 3Pros
- Looks beautiful, imo the prettiest of Fraulein releases so far
- Great detail and color on the sculpt
- It’s Shunya Yamashita’s!

Cons
- Too fragile imo. The joints breaks off a bit too easy.
- The revoltech joints below the waist are a bit awkward. In effect, legs could not be bent in sitting position. I think this is more related to its basic E.L.F design, and affected all of the other Fraulein figures.

What is Revoltech?

Revoltech is an action figure line from Kaiyodo, a Japanese company dedicated to figurines and garage kits. Revoltech inherits Kaiyodo’s quality, which has been widely recognized for its detailed and faithful sculpts.

The name Revoltech itself is an abbreviation of “revolver joint technology.” The joint technology utilized in all of the line is the main selling point of Revoltech. It gives figures very high degree of articulation, revolutionary allowing for dynamic and variable poses.

At first it covered mostly characters and mechas from animes and video games. In near future Revoltech may also be made for movie characters and others.

Its low price range is also the attractor factor which has made it the hottest toyline since its first release in 2006.

History of Revoltech

First generation of Revoltech is branched into 3 main categories, Super Robot, Real Robo, and Humanoid. After the first release of 3 action figures, Kaiyodo releases two figures every month, sometimes as limited releases.

Since May 2007, on its 13th release, Revoltech series was rebranded as the Yamaguchi series. It follows its main sculptor, Yamaguchi Katsuhisa. He was famed with his work on Neon Genesis Evangelion, Hokuto No Ken, and Trigun figures.

Kaiyodo only released 2 humanoid figures for first generation, before branching its humanoid into another line: 2G or Second Generation, also on May 2007. Though they still did release Toro from Doko Demo Issyo in their 29th release.

On September 2007 Kaiyodo started a Miniature Revoltech line, but released mostly Evangelion figures. Only then at Wonfest 2008 we saw a Mini Danboard figure.

January 2008 saw the new type of Revoltech called, Fraulein series. Taken from old German language, fraulein means lady, thus characterizes its releases as specialized only on female figures.

Three upcoming new series were introduced at First Revoltech Expo December 2007. The Assemble Borg set is a unique set intended for people to be able to build their own revoltechs. The other two are a series of figures dedicated to Hokuto No Ken or Fist of the North Star anime and Street Fighter.
